U.S. sets two conditions for restarting talks. Pakistan pushes for 45 day extension of ceasefire.

The United States has set two conditions for renewing talks with Iran in Pakistan. The first is the full and unrestricted reopening of the Strait of Hormuz before the talks begin. The second is agreement by all senior regime officials to any understandings reached in Islamabad. That is according to two diplomatic sources familiar with the matter.

Since the talks were stopped early Sunday morning, the Pakistanis, along with other mediators including Oman, Egypt and Turkey, have been trying to bring about their renewal before the two-week time frame President Donald Trump set for the negotiations expires. So far, however, Iran has not fulfilled its commitment to reopen the strait, apparently because of opposition from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, despite prior agreement by the political echelon.

PANews reported on April 14th, citing Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper, that a Pakistani diplomatic source stated that Pakistan is calling for a 45-day extension of the temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran. The source indicated that since the conclusion of negotiations last weekend, Pakistan has been in contact with multiple parties to establish broad consensus and strive for an extension of the ceasefire, or the resumption of technical-level contact between the US and Iran, paving the way for a second round of formal negotiations. Intermediaries have been assisting the US and Iran in exchanging information on outstanding issues, hoping to persuade both sides to extend the ceasefire for at least 45 days.

President Trump is offering a grand bargain — Making Iran great again if they will give up nuclear ambition.

Vance said today that Trump “wants to make the grand bargain” on Iran and is promising economic success to the isolated country.

“He doesn’t want to make like a small deal. He wants to make the grand bargain,” Vance said at a Turning Point USA event in Georgia today.

“In Pakistan, we made a ton of progress,” he said of negotiations this weekend that failed to produce a final agreement.

“But the reason why the deal is not yet done is because the president, he really wants a deal where Iran doesn’t have a nuclear weapon, Iran is not state-sponsoring terrorism — but also, the people of Iran can thrive and prosper and join the world economy,” Vance said.
