China just pulled ahead in the global energy race and barely anyone in the West is paying attention. Engineers there have finished building a wind turbine so massive it makes most American skyscrapers look small. It stands taller than a 63 story building and is already operational.
This single turbine can generate enough electricity to power 55,000 homes for a full year. It eliminates the need for 30,000 tons of coal and prevents 80,000 tons of carbon from entering the atmosphere. It is also 31 percent larger than the last record holder and designed to survive typhoons.
