AI data centers are wrecking neighborhoods with nonstop turbine noise that never stops

This is one of those stories where you hear the details and think, wait… how did this become normal?

In Sterling, Virginia, residents near Vantage’s VA2 data center say natural gas turbines powering the facility have been running constantly since March 2025.

The problem?

They say the high-pitched noise never goes away.

Neighbors describe hearing the turbines 24 hours a day, every day. Some say they have put mattresses over windows and added plexiglass just to block the sound.

Residents are using phone apps to measure the noise and say it has affected sleep, created stress, and made everyday life harder.

The company reportedly said the turbines were temporary.

But after more than a year of continuous operation, people are asking a pretty simple question:

At what point does “temporary” become permanent?

This is the part of the AI boom that gets less attention.

Everyone talks about the billions going into data centers, the chips, and the race for more computing power.

But those giant facilities need enormous amounts of electricity, and sometimes the solution comes right next to where people live.

Virginia has become one of the biggest data center hubs in the world, but communities are increasingly raising concerns about the side effects, including noise and air quality.

The technology may be moving fast.

But the question is whether the neighborhoods around these facilities are being asked to absorb the cost.
