Youth in Morocco protest against World Cup spending over schools, hospitals

Anti-government demonstrators in Morocco filled the streets for a fifth straight night Wednesday, with protests over public services spiraling into violence and destruction across multiple cities.

At least two people have died in Moroccan Gen Z protests, also dubbed “GenZ212” or the “Gen Z Uprising”, in yet another flare-up of youth-led anger similar to movements in Nepal and Bangladesh. This is the most significant protest movement in Morocco since the 2011 February 20 movement linked to the Arab Spring, and the 2016–2017 Hirak Rif uprising. Who are the organisers of this protest? And what is the football link to this protest? Here is what you should know.

From September 27, protests erupted across at least 15 cities, including Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakesh, Agadir, and Tangier, mainly led by Moroccan youth born in the mid-1990s to early 2010s.

“The right to health, education and a dignified life is not an empty slogan but a serious demand,” the organizers of the Gen Z 212 protest movement wrote in a statement published on Discord. They cited King Mohammed VI, implored protesters to remain peaceful and blasted “repressive security approaches.”

Still, the protests have escalated and become more destructive, particularly in cities far from where development efforts have been concentrated in Morocco. Local outlets and footage filmed by witnesses show protesters hurling rocks and setting vehicles ablaze in cities and towns in the country’s east and south, including in Inzegane and Ait Amira. In Oujda, eastern Morocco’s largest city, a police vehicle that rammed into demonstrators in Morocco left one person injured, local human rights groups and the state news agency MAP said.
