Gov. Greg Abbott seemed to be full of jokes on the eve of Election Night, saying he’d “impose a 100 percent tariff” on anyone moving to Texas from New York City.
Abbott’s viral X post appeared to be a thinly veiled reference to New York City’s mayoral race, in which self-described Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is the frontrunner.
Abbott’s quip—likening potential New York City movers to imported goods—was a nod both to President Donald Trump’s tariffs and the anxieties over a possible wave of ex-New Yorkers who don’t support Mamdani seeking refuge in Texas.
