The talk of making Venezuela the fifty first state is the ultimate power play by an administration that is tired of being held hostage by Middle Eastern oil. Trump is essentially telling the world that if the Gulf is going to stay in a permanent state of war he will just annex the largest oil reserves on the planet and bring them under the American flag. This matters because it completely changes the math for China and Russia who have spent a decade trying to buy influence in Caracas. By floating statehood Trump is signaling that the US presence in Venezuela isn’t some temporary peacekeeping mission but a permanent seizure of energy assets. While the acting government in Venezuela talks about sovereignty the reality is that the US military is already on the ground and the big oil companies are already moving in their equipment. We are watching the beginning of a new era of American energy imperialism where the map is being redrawn to ensure that the middle class never has to worry about a strait in the Middle East being blocked again.
