Factcheck: Multiple reputable outlets reported on March 11–12, 2026 that the U.S. Department of Energy will release 172 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). At the time of the announcement, the SPR held just over 415 million barrels, meaning that after the release, approximately 243 million barrels would remain.
