The full Florida legislature is about to vote on PASSING Gov. Ron DeSantis’ abolishment of property taxes for most primary homeowners

What the proposal does:

  • It would dramatically increase the homestead exemption (for primary residences) from the current $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027, then to $250,000 in 2028.
  • It includes a path toward full elimination of non-school property taxes on homesteaded homes.
  • This would immediately eliminate property taxes for roughly 60% of Florida homeowners with primary residences, with a longer-term goal of going even further.

The full Florida Legislature (House and Senate) is currently considering the measure during this special session. It needs a 60% supermajority in both chambers to pass and go to voters as a constitutional amendment on the November 2026 ballot.
