Trump’s order levies 40% tariffs on transshipped goods and 10% on goods from unlisted countries. The rule applies to imports “entered for consumption” 7 days after signing. Canada, Malaysia, and UAE were named directly, while Mexico received a temporary exemption following a direct call from its president. Schumer’s office has not proposed any tariff rollback or trade replacement policy. There is no Senate bill introduced addressing tariff authority or alternatives. A senior Democratic aide said no vote is planned before recess.

Current pricing data shows a 1.3% rise in tariff-sensitive goods like furniture. Retailers are still running on pre-tariff stock, but Q4 price hikes are expected. So far, Schumer’s remarks register as rhetorical, not legislative.
