Russia warns Britain ‘nuclear annihilation inevitable’… NATO CHIEF: Prepare for scale of war our grandparents faced

You can tell something is changing when the language stops sounding like diplomacy and starts sounding like a warning shot. Moscow is not whispering. They are pointing straight at Britain and talking about things our generation has never lived through. And the people inside NATO can feel it because their tone has shifted into something heavier. Something urgent. Something that tells you this is not the old standoff anymore.

Russia grabbed the death of a twenty eight year old British paratrooper and turned it into a threat aimed at the entire country. They did not even try to soften it. They did not pretend it was anything else. They took it and used it like a signal flare.

British armed forces in Ukraine amount to a “casus belli” for a nuclear strike, Russia has warned.

The Putin propaganda machine has threatened that the admission of the British armed forces being present in Ukraine amounts to a “casus belli” for a nuclear strike on the UK. Kremlin funded state TV seized on the death of UK paratrooper George Hooley, 28, in an explosion behind friendly lines while observing Ukrainian forces testing a defensive capability.

Leading Kremlin propagandist hawk, Vladimir Solovyov, told viewers on his nightly show: “Now a nuclear strike on Britain is inevitable….” Historian Andrey Sidorov, another Putin cheerleader, said: “This incident should be considered a casus belli, when the British Ministry of Defence officially acknowledged the death of its military personnel on active duty on Ukrainian territory.” He demanded the Russian foreign ministry summon British ambassador Nigel Casey or a chargé d’affaires “to explain what an active duty military officer was doing there”.

When someone on Russian state television says a nuclear strike is inevitable, that is not accidental language. That is not loose talk. That is someone speaking to an audience that has been trained to expect escalation. And then you turn and look at NATO and you can see the worry written into every sentence.

NATO’s chief does not usually sound like a man trying to wake up a sleeping continent. Now he does.

NATO chief Mark Rutte has urged the West to prepare for war “like our grandparents endured”.

He warned the UK and other allies are next in Russia’s sights and said member states must rapidly boost defence spending. Speaking at a security conference event in Berlin, Rutte said: “We are Russia’s next target. I fear that too many are quietly complacent.

“Too many don’t feel the urgency. And too many believe that time is on our side. It is not. The time for action is now.

“Conflict is at our door. Russia has brought war back to Europe. And we must be prepared.”

Rutte predicted that Russia could engage the alliance in direct conflict within the next five years.

The gap between these messages is not a gap at all. One side is speaking like the fight is already here. The other side is speaking like the window is closing. Nobody is calming anyone down. Nobody is telling the public everything is fine. That silence should bother people more than anything.

Something is moving. Something is building. And people keep hoping someone else will say the words that make it go away. But the people with the microphones are saying the opposite. They are speaking like time is running out.
