Peace is getting sidelined while NATO signs bigger checks for the defense industry

Every NATO summit talks about security.

This one also came with a shopping spree worth billions.

Secretary General Mark Rutte unveiled major joint procurement deals for defense companies.

That includes Airbus A330 MRTT tankers.

It also includes up to 10 Saab GlobalEye surveillance aircraft to replace the aging AWACS fleet.

Those aren’t small purchases.

They’re programs that can lock governments into decades of maintenance, upgrades, and support contracts.

Then came the part that really caught my attention.

NATO launched a new platform called Front Door.

The goal is simple.

Make it easier for weapons makers to get through the system.

Less paperwork.

Less waiting.

Faster access to military contracts.

More than 100 companies were brought together to expand production.

That doesn’t sound like an alliance preparing for a short crisis.

It sounds like an alliance building a long term defense industry pipeline.

Then Trump added another twist.

He said he would consider letting Turkey buy F-35 fighter jets.

He also said the U.S. would lift sanctions on Turkey.

That is a major reversal.

Turkey was kicked out of the F-35 program and sanctioned after buying Russia’s S-400 air defense system.

Now Washington appears willing to reopen that door.

If that happens, it would be another huge win for the defense industry.

Rutte also kept pushing the 5% defense investment goal.

The message seems pretty clear.

Spend more.

Build more.

Deliver faster.

Peace negotiations may still make headlines.

But the money is flowing somewhere else.

When governments start cutting red tape, signing decades long weapons contracts, and even reconsidering blocked fighter jet sales, it raises an obvious question.

Are leaders preparing for conflicts to wind down.

Or are they expect high military spending to become the new normal?

Either way, defense contractors just walked away from Ankara with a very good week.
