There is a massive disconnect between a former President bragging about “no missiles” and the reality of the drone swarms currently lighting up the Middle East. Obama is taking a victory lap for a piece of paper, but the people living in the path of Iranian proxies are living through a different story. To claim success because the U.S. didn’t pull the trigger ignores the fact that we handed the holster to a regime that hasn’t stopped shooting since.
The “pallets of cash” narrative isn’t just a talking point it is the foundational sin of modern Middle Eastern policy. By unfreezing those assets and providing physical currency, the U.S. essentially subsidized the very drone and missile programs we are now spending billions to intercept. It is a circular logic where we pay for the arson and then wonder why the neighborhood is on fire. Obama’s “missile-free” diplomacy looks a lot like a delayed-fuse bomb from the perspective of 2026.
We are watching the long-term consequences of prioritizing a “legacy” over local reality. While the architects of the JCPOA enjoy the talk show circuit, the IRGC is busier than ever moving billions through front companies in Iraq and the UAE. Diplomacy that doesn’t account for the nature of the regime it is dealing with isn’t a peace plan it is just a high-priced way to buy time for your enemies to reload.
