Fires rage across South Korea, over 5,400 people evacuated, at least 16 dead

South Korea is reeling from devastating wildfires that have claimed at least 16 lives as of March 25, 2025. What started as a blaze in Uiseong, North Gyeongsang Province, has turned into a raging inferno that’s spread across the country. For four days, it’s scorched a swath of land, engulfing Andong, Cheongsong, Yeongyang, and Yeongdeok in flames. Ancient temples and irreplaceable cultural sites are now casualties of nature’s wrath.

The death toll is climbing, with fatalities scattered across the affected areas: 2 in Andong, 3 in Cheongsong, 5 in Yeongyang, and 3 in Yeongdeok. These numbers will likely keep rising as authorities work to control the chaos. The fires have burned more than 15,000 hectares of land and destroyed over 150 buildings, including homes and vital infrastructure.

Evacuations are widespread, with more than 5,400 people forced to flee their homes. The southeast regions, particularly Sancheong, Uiseong, and Ulsan, have been hit hardest by the blazes. As of now, more than half of the fires have been contained, but the battle is far from over. Social media is flooded with images showing the terrifying scope of the destruction, underscoring the scale of this disaster.

Authorities are working tirelessly to bring the wildfires under control, but the destruction is staggering. With over 5,400 people evacuated and thousands of acres lost, the long-term effects of these fires will be felt for years to come.
