BREAKING: The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been shut down and “no longer exists,” according to Trump Admin officials
Elon Musk’s controversial Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) no longer exists after its contract was terminated early.
Doge, created by Donald Trump and Mr Musk to cut wasteful spending, was disbanded with eight months left on its charter, according to its director.
The Tesla billionaire left the White House in April after an explosive fallout with the US president, which culminated in Mr Musk tweeting that Mr Trump was “in the Epstein files”.
His department, made up of young teenagers with access to sensitive government information, initially continued its work in the background.
But it is no longer a “centralised entity” with its former employees given new jobs in the administration, Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), told Reuters.
The OPM, the federal government’s human resources office, has since taken over many of Doge’s functions, he added.
Doge claimed to have slashed tens of billions of dollars in expenditures. But the claims were contested by financial experts because the unit did not provide detailed public accounting of its work.
Department staff have since taken on other roles in the administration. Most prominent is Joe Gebbia, the co-founder of Airbnb, who Mr Trump tasked with improving the “visual presentation” of government websites.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been quietly disbanded with eight months left in its charter, according to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) director.
OPM Director Scott Kupor told Reuters that DOGE—the sweeping cost-cutting effort led by billionaire Elon Musk that dominated the first months of President Donald Trump’s second term—“doesn’t exist,” adding that most of the office’s functions have been absorbed by OPM, the federal government’s human resources agency.
He added that the OPM and the Office of Management and Budget would “institutionalize” the changes made by DOGE.
