Republicans in the Senate just slipped $1 billion in taxpayer funding into a big reconciliation package for “security adjustments and upgrades” tied to Trump’s new White House ballroom (the East Wing modernization project). The ballroom itself started as a privately funded thing (originally pitched at $200M, then ballooned to around $400M), but now security features (above and below ground) are getting full taxpayer backing.
