Australia has recorded its first-ever human case of highly pathogenic bird flu. The H5N1 avian influenza was detected in a child who had traveled to India and later became unwell in March. Genetic sequencing confirmed the avian influenza virus as H5N1, a strain that circulates in South-East Asia and has been found in previous human infections and poultry. Fortunately, the child made a full recovery after hospitalization.
