Wealthy foreigners paid $90,000 for weekend safaris to kill civilians in Sarajevo. 11,000 people were killed in sniper alley.

“Italian prosecutors are investigating claims that wealthy foreigners paid up to $90,000 to travel to Sarajevo during the Bosnian war and take part in ‘human safaris,’ shooting at civilians trapped in the city… Witnesses allege that these trips were organized with the complicity of Serbian forces, turning the siege into a grotesque form of entertainment.”

Now THAT has got to be the coldest behavior heard in a long time. If true the perpetrators need to spend the rest of their lives in a tiny cold cell. Story needs to be proven or disproven either way, because something that disgusting can’t just hang out there without being nailed down.

“During the siege of Sarajevo, more than 11,000 people were killed in what became known as sniper alley… Investigators now believe that some of those deaths may have been the result of foreigners who paid to join in the shooting, with a price list that made children the most expensive targets and elderly victims free.”

This makes sense to me. In the 90s we would fly in aid and supplies to the besieged city of Sarajevo from Rhine-Main Air Base in Germany. In our intel briefs we were always told about heightened sniper activity within the city and the airport, and what most of us found strange was that the targets were almost always civilians. I remember our team being tasked to photograph and video tape an area in downtown Sarajevo from a moving van racing at high speed in what was then called Sniper Alley. To this day no idea what they found in those images. They took the footage straight from our cameras and we were never told anything else.
