Uttarakhand disaster: Entire town eaten by the river

A massive flash flood swept through Kheerganga in Uttarkashi, India, after heavy rainfall triggered landslides and turned the river into a roaring wall of mud and debris. Entire homes, bridges, and roads were wiped out.

One resident described the horror in a chilling video filmed mid-collapse: “The whole Kheerganga market has been washed away… please save our lives.”

According to India Today, “At least 4 people have died and 10 are missing after flash floods hit multiple villages in Uttarkashi district following a cloudburst over the weekend.”

The disaster hit hard in places with no early warning. Roads were cut off. Power was out. Families got separated. Locals say no one expected this level of destruction. It came in minutes.

The Times of India confirmed “a massive search and rescue effort is underway, with disaster response teams using drones and helicopters to locate survivors.”

The river’s path had shifted violently, carving new trails through entire villages. Officials believe this may be linked to rapid glacier melt combined with unstable mountain slopes weakened by weeks of rain.

This isn’t the first deadly flash flood to hit Uttarakhand in recent years. But this one has hit deeper, faster, and with little warning.

Residents say early warning systems were either offline or delayed. Many survivors were left on their own for hours.
