US on pace to have more immigrants leaving the country than coming in

For the first time in 50 years, the U.S. is on track to have more immigrants leaving the country than coming in, according to the Pew Research Center.

While President Donald Trump applauds the report, saying it’s proof his immigration policies are working, analysts say the U.S. economy should be worried.

The Pew Research Center reported that in January 2025, a record 53.3 million immigrants lived in the country. Today, that number has dropped to 51.9 million, meaning a negative migration of both documented and undocumented immigrants – the first time that’s happened since the 1960s.
