US builds massive force on Diego Garcia, is war with Iran near?

Are we on the brink of war with Iran? That’s the looming question as a significant U.S. military buildup in the Indian Ocean has raised alarms. Seven B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, 10 aerial refueling tankers, and at least three C-17 cargo planes have been spotted at Diego Garcia, a British island territory that has historically served as a launchpad for U.S. military operations in the Middle East. The timing is critical, with tensions rising over Iranian support for Houthi militants and growing concerns over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.

The numbers are staggering. The deployment of this large force in just 48 hours is nothing short of alarming. Diego Garcia’s strategic location, far from the reach of missiles or drones in the region, gives the U.S. an operational advantage, making it a vital staging area for any potential action. Unlike other U.S. bases in the Middle East, Diego Garcia is out of the immediate reach of Iran’s longest-range missiles, which can only travel around 1,242 miles—significantly shorter than the distance to the island.

But the real game-changer here? The B-2 bombers. These stealth aircraft are a weapon of unique capabilities, able to penetrate dense air defenses and strike deeply buried targets. The B-2 is currently the only platform capable of delivering the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bombs—30,000-pound munitions designed to penetrate hardened bunkers and fortifications. With Iran’s nuclear facilities being well-guarded and deeply buried, the MOP could prove critical in any strike on these sites.

Adding to the urgency, U.S. Navy assets are also being repositioned in the region. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth recently extended the deployment of the USS Harry S. Truman and directed another carrier strike group, led by the USS Carl Vinson, to join it in the Middle East. This is a clear show of force meant to send a message to Tehran.

Could this be the buildup before the storm? The movements of C-17s, tankers, and B-2 bombers suggest something larger than routine operations. This is a force package that surpasses the scale typically seen in recent Bomber Task Force deployments, signaling that a serious military operation may be on the horizon.
