President Trump said Friday his choice for the next chair of the Federal Reserve should consult him on setting interest rates.
Trump told The Wall Street Journal in an interview he was leaning toward selecting either National Economic Council head Kevin Hassett or former Federal Reserve board of governors member Kevin Warsh for the role.
But whoever his choice is, he said the pick should seek his insight on interest rates.
“Typically, that’s not done anymore. It used to be done routinely. It should be done,” Trump told the Journal. “It doesn’t mean—I don’t think he should do exactly what we say. But certainly we’re — I’m a smart voice and should be listened to.”
Trump added that he would like to see interest rates at 1 percent, “and maybe lower than that” this time next year.
“We should have the lowest rate in the world,” he said.
