On April 9, Venezuelan police in Caracas fired tear gas at ~2,000 protesters marching toward the presidential palace, demanding higher salaries and pensions. AFP reporters on the ground confirmed it, along with outlets like France 24, Euronews, AP, and Al Jazeera. Acting President Delcy RodrĂguez had announced a wage increase for May 1 (amount undisclosed). The minimum wage remains extremely low at ~130 bolivars (~$0.25 USD/month).
"Let's go to Miraflores!" the demonstrators shouted as they pressed long-standing demands for increases to wages so low that many struggle to survive.
