The numbers: The number of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits last week rose slightly to 230,000, but there was still no sign of widespread layoffs even as the jobs market cooled.

New claims increased by 2,000 in the seven days that ended Sept. 7 from 228,000 in the prior week, the government said Thursday.

Economists polled by the Wall Street Journal had forecast new claims to total 225,000, based on seasonally adjusted figures.
