Thailand declares martial law

More than 100,000 residents were evacuated from the Thai-Cambodian border area. Many sought refuge in temples and emergency shelters.

The background to the current disputes is a long-standing dispute over the exact demarcation of the border between the two countries. In the past, military tensions have repeatedly arisen in the vicinity of historic temple complexes.

The United Nations Security Council plans to convene an emergency meeting on Friday evening to discuss possible measures to de-escalate the situation.
