Spain’s far-left Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced a new tool to censor social media.

Sánchez presented HODIO (Huella del Odio y la Polarización, or Footprint of Hatred and Polarization).

According to him, it is a new tool for monitoring the spread, evolution, and impact of “hate speech and polarizing content” on digital platforms.

The leftist Prime Minister promised to hold social media companies accountable for their handling of harmful content.

Pedro Sánchez launches HODIO, a tool against polarization on social networks: “They will have to be held accountable”

The system, announced at the first Forum Against Hate, will generate a ‘ranking’ to order platforms based on the amount of problematic content they move

“We no longer surrender to the platforms; Now they are the ones who will have to be accountable to societies. Let’s stop the hate. Our mission is for us to talk more about love and less about hate“, Sánchez said in a speech at the first Forum against Hate.

The new tool, as explained, will be “based on recognized academic criteria and will combine quantitative analysis and expert review to guarantee precision and representativeness”. It will be applied on Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube and Facebook, the most popular platforms in the country, and will generate a ranking “public and transparent” that will allow you to visualize which of them contains the most content that incites hatred.

Sánchez wants to turn this trace of hate into something similar to the carbon footprint, which means that companies have to pay more environmental taxes based on what they pollute, for example. This issue is a priority for the Executive and it is developing several measures to combat hatred on social networks which, according to La Moncloa analyses, explains a good part of the success of the extreme right among young people because it intoxicates the entire political debate on the networks, which is the natural place of information for millions of people, especially digital natives.

Last month he launched an offensive against impunity on the networks: they will be prohibited until the age of 16 and manipulating the algorithm will be a crime.

It was during his speech at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, where he stated that “social networks have become a failed state, in which laws are ignored and crimes are tolerated”. There, he has assured that Spain will prohibit access to social networks for minors under 16 years of age, forcing digital platforms to implement effective age verification systems. This measure will be implemented, according to sources from the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Public Service, through an amendment to the bill for the protection of minors in digital environments which is currently being processed in Congress. “We will protect them from the digital Wild West”, he said.
