Spain no longer rules out lockdowns due to the flu epidemic

Brits heading for Spain may soon have to wear a face mask again due to the huge surge in flu and Covid cases. On December 3, health chiefs will decide whether to impose their compulsory use in certain indoor spaces, including hospitals and health centers, and possibly other areas with a large number of people, such as cinemas or theatres.

Spain’s Minister of Health, Mónica García, said local communities are committed to following the new measures. She said she hoped councillors of the Popular Party “are not going to put their political interests above the health of the population this year”. The Minister of Health explained that this season’s flu epidemic is arriving four to seven weeks earlier than in previous years. This is due to the H3N2 virus, which has not been dominant in recent seasons, potentially leading to a decrease in people’s immunity.
