Dutch researchers now estimate the universe will end in 1 followed by 78 zeros, replacing the previous projection of 1 followed by 1100 zeros years.
The revised timeline comes from new modeling of Hawking radiation and the eventual evaporation of white dwarf stars.
Lead author Heino Falcke called it:
“much sooner than expected.”
Meanwhile, with signs that dark energy may be weakening, some scientists warn the cosmos could one day collapse in a “Big Crunch.”
Walter van Suijlekom, co-author:
“We want to better understand the theory, and perhaps one day, unravel the mystery of Hawking radiation.”
