Rapidan Dam in Minnesota in ‘imminent failure condition’ after recent flooding

The Rapidan Dam in Minnesota is indeed facing an imminent failure condition after recent flooding of the Blue Earth River. Officials from the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office have reported that the river has eroded around the sides of the dam, and debris is accumulating in the water. Although it remains uncertain whether the dam will completely fail or hold, authorities have issued notifications to downstream residents and relevant regulatory agencies. The dam, located outside the city of Mankato, approximately 85 miles southwest of Minneapolis, was built in 1910 as an energy source and is managed by the countyXcel Energy, which supplies power to around 600 customers through a substation at the dam, is working to replace the washed-away substation and restore power. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has emphasized safety, property protection, and monitoring the situation closely, given the ongoing threat of flooding in the region.
