Poland Finds Leak in Druzhba Pipeline, Shuts Oil Line To Germany

Poland said it had halted pumping through one line of the Druzhba pipeline, which carries oil from Russia to Europe, after detecting a leak. Polish pipeline operator PERN said the leak was detected near Chodecz, central Poland. The leak was detected on one of the two lines of the western section of the Druzhba through which crude oil reaches Germany, PERN said. Firefighters and PERN emergency services were at the scene but there were no reports of a fire. PERN said the second line of the Russian-European oil pipeline was operating normally. The Polish pipeline operator also said that there was no health threat to local residents. Germany stopped buying Russian oil in January, but it reportedly gets Kazakh oil imported through the line. The leak comes amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine and nearly a year after major leaks were found in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in September 2022.
