Newsom pretends CNN and MSNBC are not part of the media machine

One part of this story made me stop.

Gavin Newsom mapped out what he thinks is the conservative media ecosystem. He described a pipeline from the Daily Wire to the New York Post to Fox News and eventually into the White House. Fair enough. Political media absolutely influences politicians.

Then he said he doesn’t see anything comparable on CNN or MSNBC.

Wait… what?

That’s the part people are reacting to, because it sounds like he’s acknowledging one side has a powerful media network while acting like the other side somehow doesn’t.

Whether you lean left or right, it’s hard to pretend CNN, MSNBC, the major broadcast networks, and many large newspapers haven’t played a huge role in shaping political narratives for years. Conservatives didn’t build alternative outlets in a vacuum. A big reason those outlets grew is because millions of people believed the legacy media wasn’t representing them.

That doesn’t automatically make every conservative outlet right or every mainstream outlet wrong. But saying liberals don’t have anything similar is the claim that raises eyebrows.

The timing is interesting too.

Newsom has recently been telling Democrats to spend less time talking about pronouns and identity politics and more time talking about housing costs and everyday bills. He’s also appeared on podcasts with conservative figures, which has already upset parts of his own party.

So now he’s trying to explain why conservatives have been so effective at building an alternative media ecosystem. But in doing that, he may have made an argument that many people simply don’t buy.

The bigger question isn’t whether conservative media is influential. It clearly is.

The question is why someone would describe that ecosystem in detail while acting like the mainstream media doesn’t influence Democratic politics at all.

That’s the part that doesn’t add up, and it’s why this comment is getting far more attention than the rest of the interview.
