Memorial Day traveler forecast: 45 million Americans expected to travel over holiday weekend — another record

Despite soaring gas prices, more than 39 million people will hit the road this weekend, according to AAA.

An estimated 45 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home for this upcoming Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA’s latest projections. While that figure represents a small increase (0.4%) over last year’s 44.8 million, it’s another record for the holiday.

The majority of these holiday weekend travelers — 39.1 million, or 87% — will travel by car, even though drivers are paying more at the pump this year compared to last. As of May 11, the national average for a gallon of regular gas was $4.52, up $1.39 from 2025.

“Despite higher fuel prices, many people are prioritizing leisure travel during holiday breaks,” Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement announcing the travel forecast.
