Major 7.5 magnitude earthquake strikes Taiwan, triggering tsunami warning. Evacuations in Okinawa; sirens sound.

A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the entire island of Taiwan early Wednesday, collapsing buildings in a southern city and creating a tsunami that washed ashore on southern Japanese islands.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) forecast a tsunami of up to three metres for the southern Japanese island group of the Okinawa prefecture.

A 30-centimetre wave was detected on the coast of Yonaguni island, approximately 111 kilometres off Taiwan’s east coast, about 15 minutes after the quake struck.

“A tsunami warning for waves of up to 3 meters was issued Wednesday morning for islands in Okinawa Prefecture following a magnitude 7.5 earthquake off Taiwan that registered over 4 on the 7-point Japanese shindo seismic intensity scale.

There is a likelihood that waves will reach higher and that it may reach the coast earlier or later than expected. Residents near the coasts are advised to evacuate to higher ground to ensure their safety.”
