Kimmel comeback flop: Ratings drop 70%

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s comeback was embarrassingly short-lived.

Since his return to the airwaves, Kimmel has enjoyed a significant boost in support from leftists who wanted to stick it to Republicans. On Tuesday, he saw a record 6.3 million average viewers, many of whom undoubtedly turned in to see what he would say about his suspension.

But on Wednesday night, he only managed to pull 2,414,000 average viewership, which is leagues above his normal average of 1.7 million but constitutes a 70% drop from the previous day. He managed to climb over Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon, but fell short of Gutfeld!, which had 3,233,000 average viewers. It will likely continue to return to its baseline viewership in the coming days and weeks, which means it will once again be costing the network money to produce.

September 24, 2025 2:57pm

UPDATE 9/25: Jimmy Kimmel‘s Tuesday night return to ABC has now officially become his late-night show’s second most-watched episode ever.

Final Nielsen numbers place the audience at nearly 6.5M live + same-day viewers. That tops nearly ever episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live ever among total viewers, behind only its post-Oscars special over 10 years ago in 2014. That episode still holds the crown with almost 7.1M.
