An 18-year-old named Dantr Wright was sentenced to 285 years in prison on July 7 after a courtroom incident that stunned observers and shifted the tone of the entire proceeding. Wright had originally faced 25 years for his role in the fatal robbery and shooting of high school student Jordan Cle. But during the sentencing phase, Wright laughed audibly while the victim’s mother delivered her statement. The judge, visibly disturbed by the lack of remorse, recalibrated the sentence to life without parole, stacking multiple counts consecutively to reach the 285-year total. The courtroom fell silent as the ruling was read.

The case stemmed from a botched robbery in late 2024 involving Wright and two accomplices. Prosecutors presented surveillance footage and forensic evidence showing Wright fired the fatal shot. The jury convicted him on charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery, and unlawful possession of a firearm. During trial, Wright showed little emotion. But it was his behavior during sentencing, smirking, laughing, and reportedly mocking the grieving mother, that triggered the judge’s final decision. “You’ve made your position clear,” the judge said. “Now I’ll make mine.”
