In an escalation of tensions between Washington and Caracas, U.S. President Donald Trump took to social media on Saturday to declare the airspace above Venezuela effectively off-limits. The announcement, delivered via his Truth Social platform, warns all international carriers and private pilots operating in the region.
“To all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY,” the President wrote.
The declaration comes just days after federal aviation officials flagged the region as increasingly dangerous for civil aviation. Last week, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a bulletin to major U.S. carriers, citing a “potentially hazardous situation” for flights traversing Venezuelan airspace.
The regulator pointed to a “worsening security situation” and “heightened military activity” as primary concerns, though specific details on the military maneuvers remain classified.

Action in Venezuela ‘very soon’…
President Donald Trump on Thanksgiving night threatened the U.S. could “very soon” attack suspected drug runners on Venezuelan soil.
Trump made the comments during a Thanksgiving address to U.S. servicemembers around the globe. He thanked the Air Force for its work in attacking ships in the Caribbean Sea his administration said is trafficking drugs.
“It’s about 85% stopped by sea,” Trump said, “and we’ll be starting to stop them by land.”
For months, the U.S. has ramped up its military presence in the Caribbean and intensified strikes against boats the Trump administration has accused of trafficking drugs into the country, though they have provided no evidence for the claims.
Since September, the military has targeted 21 vessels, killing 82 people.
The U.S. fleet in the Caribbean includes its most advanced warship, the USS Gerald R. Ford, along with fighter jets, missile destroyers and thousands of troops in tow.
US Navy ‘Doomsday plane’ vanishes over the Atlantic during mysterious mission
A US Navy ‘Doomsday plane’ has vanished after embarking on a mysterious transatlantic mission.
The Boeing E-6B Mercury was last seen crossing the Atlantic east of Virginia Beach on public flight-tracking systems around 8.30am ET on Friday.
One of just 16 specialized ‘Doomsday planes,’ Mercury serves as a command-and-control hub for US Strategic Command, the Secretary of War and the President.
It can also transmit orders to carry out nuclear strikes if necessary.
Flight data showed the aircraft departed Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, and followed a routine southeast path over the Chesapeake Bay, skirting the Norfolk naval complex before heading offshore.
About 60 miles east of the Virginia Capes, its public transponder went dark, a normal practice during sensitive operations.

Once over the ocean, Mercury typically enters classified warning zones, lowers a multi-mile trailing wire antenna, and flies racetrack patterns for four to eight hours while sending secure test messages to submarines and ground stations.
Turning off its transponder during these operations has long led trackers to report the aircraft as ‘gone dark.’
