Research – carried out in the aftermath of the riots this month – found more than a third of Britons believe it is an important matter for the country.
It is the first time since October 2016 that it has come top of the list of concerns.
The proportion of people worried about crime has also surged.
Some 25 per cent see it as an issue – up from 6 per cent a month ago. It is the highest score since August 2019.
But concern about the NHS has declined since the election, though it it still ranked second overall, according to the Ipsos Issues Index.
The economy comes third, followed by crime, inflation, housing and poverty.
