In a bold move against discrimination, Idaho legislators have introduced Senate Bill 1291, aiming to prevent companies that engage in discriminatory practices from securing contracts with the state government. The measure specifically targets those discriminating against firearms-related businesses, while also extending protection to other industries frequently targeted by discriminatory actions.
If passed, Senate Bill 1291 will prohibit public contracts with companies boycotting individuals or entities associated with firearms, requiring contracting companies to disclose any discriminatory policies against the firearms industry. Notably, the measure broadens its scope to include protection for industries such as fossil fuel-based energy, timber, minerals, hydroelectric power, nuclear energy, and agriculture.
The legislation defines a “boycott” as any action taken without reasonable business purpose to penalize or inflict economic harm on individuals or organizations based on their engagement in specific business sectors.
Set to take effect for contracts executed on or after July 1, 2024, the legislation sends a clear message against hate and discrimination.
