Father faces child torture charges after ‘nightmare’ hike in Big Cottonwood Canyon

The father of the three young children who were rescued from Big Cottonwood Canyon after being reported missing in October now faces multiple felony charges related to child abuse.

Micah Zephan Smith, 31, was arrested on Tuesday, more than a month after he and the three children were found in Big Cottonwood Canyon. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on three counts of first-degree felony aggravated child abuse and three counts of first-degree felony child torture.

Smith and his three children – a 2-year-old boy, a 4-year-old boy, and an 8-year-old girl – were reported missing on Oct. 12, hours after they left for the hike. Search and Rescue teams immediately responded to Big Cottonwood Canyon, where they reportedly found Smith “behaving oddly” on the trail.
