People keep saying AI is a bubble.
Then I look at what the biggest companies in the world are actually doing.
Google.
Microsoft.
Meta.
Amazon.
Oracle.
None of them are slowing down.
They are all spending even more.
Google just reported another huge quarter for Cloud. Instead of saying, “We’re spending enough,” management raised capex again.
The company even reported negative free cash flow for the first time because AI infrastructure spending is happening that fast.
Meta keeps raising its AI budget.
Microsoft keeps building more data centers.
Amazon keeps expanding AWS infrastructure.
Oracle is spending like there is no tomorrow.
Apple is almost the only Mag 7 company sitting on the sidelines.
That makes me ask a simple question.
Are all these CEOs making the biggest capital allocation mistake in modern history?
Or do they see something the rest of us don’t?
These are not startups gambling with venture capital.
These companies became trillion dollar businesses because they usually allocate capital better than almost anyone else.
That doesn’t mean they can’t be wrong.
History is full of smart people making the same mistake together.
Railroads.
Fiber optics.
Dot Com.
Housing.
In every case, the technology changed the world.
Many of the investments did not make money.
That is the part people forget.
You can be right about the future and still lose a fortune paying too much to get there.
Maybe AI becomes bigger than the internet.
Maybe every dollar they are spending today earns ten dollars later.
If that happens, today’s spending will look cheap.
But there is another possibility.
Everyone is building at the same time.
Everyone is ordering GPUs at the same time.
Everyone is signing power contracts at the same time.
Everyone is building data centers at the same time.
What happens if demand grows 20% slower than expected?
You don’t need AI to fail.
You only need expectations to be too high.
That is how bubbles usually break.
Not because the technology was fake.
Because too much money chased the same idea at the same time.
I don’t know which side will be right.
But I do know this.
We are watching the largest coordinated capital spending boom the technology industry has ever seen.
If these CEOs are right, history will remember this as the beginning of a new industrial revolution.
If they’re wrong, historians will probably ask the same question everyone is asking today.
How did all the smartest companies make the same bet at exactly the same time?
