The “peaceful” era of the Caribbean is officially on life support. On Friday, President Trump dropped a rhetorical bomb during a speech in Florida, stating the U.S. will be taking control of Cuba “almost immediately.”
Trump suggested sending a carrier like the USS Abraham Lincoln to sit 100 yards off the coast. He thinks the mere presence will force a “thank you very much, we surrender” moment.
On the same day, he signed an Executive Order broadening sanctions to target basically anyone in the Cuban energy, defense, or mining sectors. It’s an economic strangulation play.

- It targets anyone (including foreign persons and companies) who operates in or supports Cuba’s energy, defense and related materiel, metals and mining, financial services, or security sectors.
- The Treasury and State Departments can add more sectors if they want.
- It allows secondary sanctions — meaning foreign banks or companies that do business with sanctioned Cuban entities can have their US assets blocked or lose access to the US financial system.
- The order also hits Cuban officials and supporters involved in repression, corruption, or human rights abuses.
This is the official White House link to the order: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/05/imposing-sanctions-on-those-responsible-for-repression-in-cuba-and-for-threats-to-united-states-national-security-and-foreign-policy/
President Díaz-Canel hit back on X, calling the moves “unilateral coercive measures” designed to intimidate. Meanwhile, the island is already facing massive blackouts from the oil blockade.

The administration is justifying this by claiming Cuba is hosting military assets for Iran, Russia, and China. They’re framing Cuba as an “extraordinary threat” less than 100 miles away.
