Canada’s Trudeau proposes new hate speech law (Bill C-63), allowing life imprisonment for speech crimes.

Sharing is Caring!

Trudeau’s call for a new hate speech law under the guise of protecting children online is a deeply troubling move. While the need to shield children from online dangers is undeniable, existing legislation already criminalizes actions that harm them. However, the proposed Online Harms Act (Bill C-63) goes far beyond child protection.

Justice Minister Arif Virani asserts that the bill aims to secure the digital world for children, emphasizing their vulnerability to online sexual exploitation, hate, and cyberbullying. Yet, a closer examination reveals a more ominous agenda. The legislation, rather than safeguarding children, appears designed to grant judges the authority to imprison adults for life based on their speech, and, remarkably, for potential future crimes the government fears they might commit.

This Online Harms Act stands out as one of the most shocking and illiberal pieces of legislation introduced in the Western world for decades. Its potential impact on free expression and personal liberties is alarming. In the context of Trudeau’s broad use of governmental powers during and after the Covid pandemic and the introduction of new subsidies for government propaganda, it sets a distressing precedent for rising totalitarianism within Western societies. This move undermines the principles of democracy and the Enlightenment, marking a concerning shift towards increased state control and censorship.
