Argentina’s President, Javier Milei, says the Falkland Islands are “illegally occupied” by the United Kingdom

Argentina’s President Javier Milei has called the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) “illegally occupied” by the United Kingdom.

He said it clearly in a speech at the United Nations last year and repeated similar language recently, saying the islands “were, are, and always will be Argentine.” He also said his government is doing “everything humanly possible” to bring them back under Argentine control.

This is a shift from his earlier more low-key stance on the issue. The UK strongly rejects the claim and says the islands’ residents want to remain British.
