The situation in the Middle East is getting very bad for world food supplies. The Strait of Hormuz is a key place for ships, and now that the fighting is happening, many ships cannot get through.
Because of this, about 30% of the world’s fertilizer trade is blocked. Fertilizer is how farmers grow enough food for everyone. Without it, crop yields go down everywhere.
The price for urea fertilizer is up more than 80% compared to last year. Experts say this is not a short problem. The damage to factories and the closed sea routes mean that many people in poor countries will not have enough food.
Congress could try to stop this, but they do not. A big reason is AIPAC. This group gives a lot of money to politicians so they keep supporting Israel and the war.
AIPAC spends millions of dollars on campaigns to make sure only pro-Israel people get elected. Even if voters want to focus on other things, the politicians listen to the big donors.
Netanyahu wants the war to continue so he can stay in power and not go to jail. Trump also does whatever Netanyahu asks. People in the U.S. government seem to care more about the money from lobbyists than they do about the millions of people who might starve because the fertilizer is stuck.
The rest of the world sees what is happening. They think the U.S. and Israel are just looking to take what they want. If tens of millions of people die from hunger, history will not be kind to the people in Washington who took the AIPAC money and sat still.
