An hour and a half away from Beaumont, you’ll find a fast-growing development called Colony Ridge.
Critics say it’s become a metropolis of migrants and a symbol of the border crisis. Others even claim it’s a haven for the Mexican drug cartels.
Many of the roughly 50,000 who live here are skilled day laborers.
“They could be working in Beaumont,” said Liberty County Pct. 6 Constable Zack Harkness.
Harkness acknowledges that are probably cartel-connected people who reside in Colony Ridge, but he tells KFDM that it’s safe here, aside from a juvenile gang issue that’s become on law enforcement’s radar.
