The Takoma Park Police Department in Montgomery County, Maryland has implemented an innovative program called “Operation Chill”. Here’s how it works:
- Purpose:
- The program aims to reduce crime and build rapport between law enforcement officers and young community members.
- What Happens:
- When police officers observe children performing good deeds or exhibiting positive behavior, they issue them Slurpee tickets.
- These tickets can be redeemed at participating 7-Eleven stores for a free small Slurpee.
- Examples of Good Deeds:
- Children can earn tickets by wearing a helmet while riding a bike, helping an elderly person cross the street, or engaging in other positive actions.
- Community Engagement:
- The program serves as an ice breaker for officers to connect with children.
- It encourages good behavior and fosters positive interactions.
- Youth Crime Context:
- Montgomery County has seen a 300% spike in youth crime between 2022 and 2023.
- By engaging with children through Operation Chill, officers hope to make a difference.
