This audacious move by Poland’s pro-EU government, led by Donald Tusk, raises serious concerns about democratic principles. Seizing control of public broadcasters, firing management, and taking channels off-air is a blatant disregard for media independence. The sit-in protest by the Law and Justice party reflects a justifiable reaction against this authoritarian action. The occupation of TVP HQ by police only adds to the suppression of dissent, painting a grim picture of the government’s commitment to democratic values. Such heavy-handed tactics undermine the very essence of a free and open society, casting doubt on the government’s commitment to pluralism and democratic governance.
