San Francisco drivers may soon be barred from turning right at red lights.

A “no turn on red” resolution was presented at a Board of Supervisors meeting this week by District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston, who represents the Tenderloin, Western Addition, Japantown and Haight-Ashbury neighborhoods.

If the resolution eventually passes, San Francisco would become the second-largest city after New York to impose a citywide ban on these turns, according to a statement released Tuesday by Preston’s office. The supervisor said in the statement that he believes banning right turns on a red light will reduce pedestrian crashes.

The resolution comes amid growing concerns about traffic safety after several fatal incidents involving right turns in San Francisco.
