Greece records hottest June in over six decades

Sharing is Caring!

In 2024, Greece experienced its hottest June since 1960, according to researchers. The average temperature in Greece has risen by 2.5 degrees Celsius over the decades from 1960 to 2024. Kostas Lagouvardos, research director at the National Observatory of Athens, reported that June 2024 was characterized by long periods of elevated temperatures, surpassing normal seasonal levels throughout the country. While June temperatures in Greece typically do not exceed 30-31 degrees Celsius (86-88 degrees Fahrenheit), this year saw temperatures reaching 35°C and a mid-June heatwave with temperatures exceeding 40°C. The increase in extreme weather events, including heatwaves, is attributed to climate change. The nation also faced an increase in wildfires, with 1,281 fires reported in June 2024 compared to 533 in the same month last year. Strong winds and drought conditions contributed to the fire risk in various regions, including Athens and the Peloponnese.
