13,000 case backlog exposes Florida justice crisis

13,000 case backlog proves failed leadership.

Now cutting deals with predators while demanding more taxpayer $.

DeSantis was right. FL needs prosecutors who protect kids, not criminals.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —
The top prosecutor for Orange and Osceola counties is defending her new policy aimed at reducing a major backlog of cases after Florida’s new attorney general, appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis after serving as his chief of staff, was quick to call for a review of the policy’s impact on public safety.

Facing a backlog of more than 13,000 cases, prosecutors at the 9th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office have new guidelines that limit the cases they’ll review when an arrest has not been made.

“I’m looking forward to collaborating with law enforcement and their legal advisors to make sure that every case that comes through this office has probable cause,” State Attorney Monique Worrell said during a news conference last Thursday.

A few hours later, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier posted on X, “The blanket policies announced by Monique Worrell are contrary to the essential duties of a prosecutor.”
