Saturday afternoon in northern Michigan turned violent inside a Walmart checkout area. At 4:43 p.m., a man armed with a folding knife attacked shoppers in Traverse City, leaving 11 people wounded. Six are in critical condition. Five are listed as serious. The suspect, a 42-year-old male, was subdued within minutes by a sheriff’s deputy and several bystanders. Authorities say the attack was random. The FBI is now involved.
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff confirmed the man is “a Michigan resident.” When pressed on nationality, he added, “It appears he was a Michigan resident.” No further details. No name. No origin. No motive. The phrasing raised eyebrows. The refusal to clarify sparked speculation. Witnesses described the attacker as “foreign-looking.” One viral post claimed an elderly woman and a child were among the victims. That hasn’t been confirmed.
The stabbing unfolded near the checkout lanes. Three victims required surgery. Munson Medical Center is handling all 11 cases. The hospital issued a statement thanking staff for responding “commendably and admirably.” Emergency services were overwhelmed. The ER hit capacity. Walmart deferred all questions to law enforcement.
🚨 WTF? They just asked police in Grand Traverse County the nationality of the Walmart mass st*bbing suspect…and he just says the person is a "Michigan resident."
"It APPEARS he was a Michigan resident."
WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN!?pic.twitter.com/AdK1rfTfKB

Traverse City sits 255 miles northwest of Detroit. Population: 16,000. It’s a tourist town. Cherry festivals. Lake views. Not a place known for mass violence. The sheriff warned, “No area is immune.” He declined to say where the suspect is from or whether immigration status played a role. The Michigan State Police Crime Lab is processing the scene.
